Sunday, May 6th is a double-header starting at Cha Cha Coconuts on the Pier from 1-5. Then, at The Independent there’s a wine tasting sponsored by Global Wines starting at 7:30, and I’ll be playing music from 8-10pmish!  That’s right folks, free wine and music!  It just doesn’t get better than that!

Certainly everyone in the dorm wished she wouldn’t have loaned it to me (she always was a little crazy).  I learned every note of that album, every nuance, every breath, at the loudest volume I could, both using my boom box (yes, boom box), and using my voice.  One night, an aggravated dormie knocked on my door and asked if I could stop singing so loud.  I tried.  I failed.

I took a musical theater class (after dropping out of the dance program), and the college professor scolded me – in front of everyone – for singing a George Gershwin tune like a “lounge singer,” i.e. however the f$#& I wanted to, or like Sarah Vaughan would!  In the next class, I sang it note-for-note as it was on the page, to much praise.  Then I dropped out of college.

A few years later, still listening to that album, still singing obnoxiously loud to it (although now in my car), I got in my first car accident.  I don’t blame Ms. Vaughan.

And even later, I accidentally ‘butt dialed’ my parent’s home phone.  They weren’t there so I left a butt-dial message for them, as any butt-dialer would.  When my Mom received the message, she at first thought I was in peril.  She heard my voice, loud, crying out.  A few notes later, she realized it was me singing with Sarah Vaughan, in my car, completely unaware that my phone had betrayed me.

So happy birthday, Sarah Vaughan!  You’ve been a major force in my life.  You’re an unwitting part of many of my memories. You’re an inevitable influence on my voice and vocal styling.  And thank you for proving to me that you can make a damn good living as a “lounge singer!”
